Expanding access to English and maths education for state school students in Tanzania
π The Educational Challenge
In Tanzania, national examinations are conducted in English. However, the majority of children attend state schools where large class sizes and limited resources mean that English is often not taught effectively.
As a result, many students complete their education without the language skills needed to fully access exams or further opportunities.
For families who can afford it, private schooling offers English instruction, but this comes at a high cost, meaning only a small number of children in each family or community are able to benefit.
π The Inequality We Are Addressing
This creates a situation where opportunity is limited to a small number of children, rather than being accessible across the wider community. In many cases only one child in a family may get the opportunity to attend a private school, while others remain in an under-resourced education system.
βοΈ Our Solution: Next Steps, Bright Futures
Next Steps, Bright Futures is a weekend learning programme providing structured tuition in English and maths for children attending state schools.
The aim is to close the gap in foundational learning and ensure that more children can succeed in their national exams and future education.
π What the Programme Provides
- Weekend tuition in English and maths
- Small group learning for focused support
- Structured teaching aligned with school curriculum
- Safe, consistent learning environment
π Why This Model Matters
For the cost of sending one child to private school for a year, this programme can educate approximately 20 children for an entire year, signigicantly increasing access to quality learning while reducing inequality in educational outcomes.
It is a scalable, community-based solution that will bring core learning skills to a much wider group of children.
π What Funding Will Provide
- Qualified teachers for weekend sessions
- Books, stationery, and learning materials
- Safe and suitable teaching spaces
- Ongoing programme coordination and development
π± Long-Term Impact
- Improved English and maths proficiency
- Higher success rates in national exams
- Increased access to further education
- Greater equality of opportunity across communities
